Foraging Passport

  As the weather continues to warm, we are noticing increased vegetation outside, both in backyard gardens and in the county parks! Through ongoing discussion with friends and neighbors facing food insecurity, we have come to appreciate the abundance of resources available to us, both traditional and somewhat less so. Peace Connections has begun collaborating with Falling Fruit to identify edible plants in Harvey County. The website, www.fallingfruit.org, serves as an excellent platform to celebrate local abundance by marking and showcasing the various plants and vegetation in our area.

    Staff and volunteers have successfully identified over 65 edible plants on public lands which can serve as a valuable source of nourishment! From mulberry trees and elderberry bushes to pear trees, there is a diverse array of options for enjoyment. We encourage you to explore the website on when specific harvests may be available and guidance on personal picking.

This month, we are thrilled to debut new posters for our friends around the community, compiling a list of all the places in the county where someone can access food, whether they are food insecure or face nutrition deficits. These posters are designed to hang in community spaces, bulletin boards, churches, offices, etc. If you would like one to share, please let us know! 39% of Kansas households struggle to afford basic needs, yet only 21% of those households receive food assistance due to systemic barriers and qualifications (Kansas Appleseed, 2024)

You might say he was already an ally before he walked through our door. Let me explain. Joe had befriended a homeless couple and was doing his best to help find them the services they needed to get their lives on a more stable path. Joe was new to Newton, he had been a teacher in Haysville for many years, and he didn’t immediately know what the process was, or who to reach out to. He just began navigating the system much the way an unhoused person would, from the ground up – with the exception that he had a car and unlimited minutes on his phone.     At every turn in this process, he realized how difficult things would be for someone without these tools that many of us take for granted.
