Getting Ahead While Getting Out

Volunteer Gary Moore has a long legacy with Peace Connections- since its inception in 1983. He helped establish the city-wide Recycling Program and has been engaged with the Peace Center ever since. In 2000, when the focus shifted toward alleviating local poverty, Gary joined the initial meetings- the ones that eventually led to starting Circles of Hope - at the McKinley Administration Building. He states, “They brought in people from Missouri and Texas to tell us about the program.” Gary knew it was a worthwhile program but didn’t think he could get fully involved due to the time commitment. However, five years ago when he semi-retired, he decided to jump right into becoming an Ally.

Simultaneously, for the past 15 years, Gary led devotionals at the Harvey Co Detention Center, and once he learned that Peace Connections was searching for a facilitator for the Getting Ahead Class, he offered his time and talent to continue the efforts and weave his two passions together. He enjoys teaching at the Detention Center because it is a service that some need.

When Gary goes to the classes, the inmates always shake his hand when they enter and again when they leave. They show a strong interest in the material because, for many, it is a new topic and helps them understand how money can be used. The men enjoy the variety they get from the class served alongside Gary’s unique humor that allows them an educational experience. They can be open and talk about themselves in a safe environment and show a judge they are making positive improvements.

Gary stated, “I am learning streetwise hacks from them while they are learning about money from me.” This mutually beneficial relationship has reverberating effects in our community, as an average of 65% of families with an incarcerated member are living below the poverty line. These gentlemen can take the lessons with them when they are released and can better write hope into their future.
