The 6th Annual Paul E. Oswald Golf Tournament

 The Oswald Golf Tournament was created in memory of Paul Oswald. Paul grew up in rural Nebraska during the hardscrabble days of the Depression and Dust Bowl. His life experiences gave him a tenderness for struggling families working hard to get ahead. As a long-time resident of Harvey County, Paul resonated with the mission of Peace Connections and the Circle of Hope program. Paul's contribution joins the gifts of many others to empower families working to build a better future through education, mentoring, and community support. Laurie states, "He was a human being who just wanted to be a better person. His vision was for people to be all they could be." Thank you, Laurie and family, for continuing his legacy through this tournament and in our community.

In speaking with Gary to find out his reason for sponsoring the Oswald Tournament, Gary shared the following:

"I met Paul at church and we bonded over our shared background of rural farm towns. One day, I made the comment to Paul that I played golf, and he thought I was just joshing him. In earnest, we began playing together on our birthdays, each April and October, but I won't tell you who would win each round! Gary now sponsors the Tournament to help keep Paul's love for the game alive."

Two Big-Hearted Women Join Peace Connection's Board

There is no better way to start off the year than bringing two big-hearted women onto the board of directors. That is what Peace Connections has done in inviting Priscilla Griffith and Jenna Ratzlaff to be part of the team. “I am excited to be part of something in which I can give back to a community that has given so much to me,” said Priscilla Griffith, a graduate of the Circle of Hope program and current owner of a Habitat for Humanity home in Newton. Griffith is a 45-year-old musician and mother to three children and works in the international shipping department at the Bradbury Company in Moundridge, Kansas. Jenna Ratzlaff is a 27-year-old Director of Social Services at Kansas Christian Home in Newton. Creating Possible Futures Dreams, Goals, and Aspirations for Harvey County      Harvey County Circle of Hope is a relationship-based poverty-reduction program geared toward individuals working to escape poverty. While the main focus is financial management and goal setting, many conversations steer toward collective resources and information. This focus shifts the narrative away from individual blame or failure and toward a place where people from various backgrounds can work together to solve the systemic barriers that keep families in poverty. This higher-level view of poverty engages a wide audience and each person becomes part of the solution!      Participants recently completed a Possible Selves/Possible Trees activity, which involved tracing their roots to community resources and strengths, identifying trunks of support (beliefs and attitudes), and naming the fruits (dreams and goals) that come as they continue to nurture their tree (themselves and t...
